CRCcomp for the Acorn
You can use the program in three ways:
- Click select on the iconbar and drag two files on the appearing window. This provides a very fast test whether files are identical by calculating their 32-bit CRC.
- Make sure that 'Log' on the iconbar menu is not ticked. Then drag a selection of files onto the iconbar. This recursively scans the directories/applications in the selection and computes a single 32-bit CRC value for all files found. This CRC is then displayed in a small window. It represents accumulated CRC's of all those files. May be used to provide a high degree of assurance that a number of files on physically separated computers are identical. May also be used to see whether the contents of a directory have changed over time.
- Choose 'Log' on the iconbar menu so that there appears a tick in front of 'Log'. As under 2), drag a selection of files onto the iconbar. The full path of each file is then written to the file <CRCcomp$Dir>.Log. Loaded in a texteditor, this file shows the following: Next to each filename is the CRC for the file and the CRC-Sum so far. Hence the CRC at the bottom right corner is the accumulated CRC-Sum of the hole selection.
The CRC-32 can be used to check for identical files even on different machines (for example to verify that a file has been transmitted correctly). CRC-32 is a widely used standard, for most computer platforms there are tools to calculate the CRC-32 (see CRC calculation on the Psion Palmtop).
CRCcomp is Freeware.
You can download CRCcomp v1.1 right from here (9k ARCed file).
